Craft Night!

Some thoughts from Internet Gramma

The retirement home is working on doing more events and getting more folks involved in the community, and one way we have been reaching out is by hosting a regular craft night in our Discord server.

As the Internet Gramma of the group, my “room” in our retirement home is the craft room. In my mind, it is a large, comfy room of tables, soft couches, upholstered armchairs. Lots of blankets, lots of snuggly cats and puppies. The light filters in just right. There are crafting supplies strewn on the tables and tucked into drawers: sewing implements, baskets of yarn and crochet hooks, watercolors and blank easels, a cricut or two, and several hand-made ceramic mugs filled with water, coffee, and fragrant tea.

Of course, this is only my vision. But every fortnight or so, we gather in the Discord to share creative space with each other and hold time to work on special projects together. It is a nice boost of accountability for finishing things (can anyone say temperature afghan) and for prioritizing our creativity.

This past Friday evening, we joked, we sang, we worked on our current WIPs. I finished knitting a glove. Tempest Auntie worked on a reversible sweater for her dog. Plant Witch Gigi drew and colored some new digital emotes for her Ko-Fi, and our ghostie pal MadKano worked on digital art as well. Skizzlerz and Papa Fey vibed with us too, and we actually announced that Papa Fey is joining us in the Retirement Home stream team! We are very excited to have them on board, and highly recommend you check them out and drop a follow on Twitch.

To me, these nights serve as a calibration point. It’s an excuse to say: What project do I need to finish? What project do I want to progress on? What skill do I want to cultivate?

After all, 2022 is the year of  art. The year of prioritizing our creativity and singing out, sharing our positivity with the world. Join us next time, won’t you?
